COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volusia County Public Library now gives free online access to GetSetUp, a learning platform with live classes on tech, health and finance plus multiple branches that offer programs such as Baby Tales, book sales and creative workshops from today through early February.  Hometown News
  • East Volusia community events will span meetings at the Palmetto Club on Feb. 6 with speaker Zacharias at 11:30 a.m. at 1000 S. Beach St., an AARP gathering on Feb. 4 in Ormond Beach, and art, historical and cultural programs at local museums and clubs.  Hometown News
  • City Manager Joe Mahoney said work to replace the weathered fishing and observation dock at Menard-May Park will start in the next few weeks and finish in April. The project is funded by FEMA after damage from the 2022 hurricane season (restoring a valued local spot for residents and visitors).  Hometown News

  • Brew and Build is a networking event hosted by the Daytona Regional Chamber at 126 E. Orange Ave. today from 8:45-10 a.m. The event features a 10-minute presentation on multigenerational leadership by Manny de la Vega and Kaitlin Healy and costs $5 with pre-registered participants receiving future complimentary admission.  Hometown News
  • Steel Oak Coffee in Ormond Beach introduced an interactive Coffee Flavor Wheel (a tool linking flavor profiles to its specialty beans) to help locals discover and buy curated roasts online. The roastery at 187 S. Yonge St. has served small-batch, ethically sourced coffee since 2016.  Hometown News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The County Council suspended the Community Cultural Grant last October, so over 30 arts groups may cut programs and delay events in 2026. Leaders say the council may vote soon to restore funds, while events like the Sun & Shores Arts Festival and Cristy B Comedy Club keep culture alive.  Hometown News
  • The Marine Science Center dedicated the John Crisp Artificial Reef Exhibit on Jan. 21 to honor the late lifeguard whose work improved beach safety and ocean protection. The updated center now offers expanded classrooms and exhibits and welcomes residents at 100 Lighthouse Drive.  Hometown News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Volusia County Schools hit a record 95.6% graduation rate for the class of 2025, with a growing number of graduates that increased by 8.2% over three years. The district also projects around 4,900 graduates next year and supports students with a targeted Graduation Playbook for credit retrieval, tutoring, and summer programs.  Hometown News
  • Embry-Riddle announced Joe Gibney as dean of its David B. O'Maley College of Business at the Daytona Beach campus, effective March 2. The experienced aviation executive led strategic initiatives at his previous roles and will work to expand career-building programs for students.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
  • Businessman L. Gale Lemerand pledged $500K to expand youth education in Daytona Beach’s 32114 area through the Lemerand Center of Excellence — a tutoring and enrichment program that has served over 60 elementary students and families following earlier donations.  Hometown News

  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating 101 dead and 17 sick vultures at Blue Spring State Park in Volusia County. Samples have been sent for testing + officials ask the public to report any additional dead birds.  News 6

  • Four cardiologists (Dr. Pant, Dr. Nag, Dr. Khan, and Dr. Derbas) now treat patients at AdventHealth DeLand and AdventHealth Fish Memorial, expanding specialized heart care options for West Volusia residents.  Hometown News
  • Arrow Clinical Trials in Daytona Beach connects patients with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other conditions to free clinical studies that offer breakthrough therapies and care. Located at 1717 N. Clyde Morris Blvd, the center reimburses participants for travel and time and sponsors community events (like Walk for Parkinson’s) for local families.  Hometown News
