- ➤ At Embry-Riddle’s 9th Launch Your Venture competition on April 4, Florida State University senior Nick Cadavid won $10,000 for his startup Morph Labs with a brainwave-controlled prosthetic hand (a project that blends healthcare and engineering). - ➤ Daytona Beach police arrested freshman Keith Holmes, 18, at Bethune-Cookman University after a sex offense report led to an administrative search that discovered a Smith & Wesson firearm with ammunition in a dorm on the 300 block of N. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A mid-air spat between a young bald eagle and a seagull led Daytona International Speedway’s fire safety crew to rescue the bird on March 28 as it struggled to fly. After a veterinary exam and flight test with help from Florida Wild Veterinary Hospital in Melbourne, experts safely released the 3-year-old eagle by Turn 2 on April 9—Marine Science Center staff oversaw the rescue as the center remains closed for renovations until early June. - ➤ A large dredge pipe was installed along the dunes in Ponce Inlet on April 10th and crews will soon pump sand onto the beach — the sand will be trucked to properties north as part of Army Corps maintenance to strengthen county beaches. The Daytona Beach News-Journal
- ➤ Crews placed a dredge pipe on Ponce Inlet beaches today as part of an Army Corps project that will pump roughly 900,000 cubic yards of sand to strengthen coastlines from north of Ponce de Leon Inlet to Sunglow Pier. County contractors will truck the sand starting mid-to-late May while property owners must sign easements for delivery — officials urge residents to avoid the pipeline for safety — and dredging is expected to continue until October or November. - ➤ The Daytona Beach Ocean Center will receive $40 million in upgrades from the Volusia County government in the coming months, with funding coming from taxes on hotels & motels and reserve funds.
