ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A brush fire broke out in Volusia County Tuesday west of New Smyrna Beach and spread to 270 acres with 5 percent containment; fire rescue units remained on standby as a burn ban took effect at midnight due to dry, windy conditions—fire crews used a helicopter to dump water and no evacuations were ordered.  WESH
  • Volusia County crews battled a 100-acre brush fire near Deltona Tuesday afternoon, and a burn ban went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday to restrict outdoor fires in unincorporated areas, Oak Hill, Lake Helen and Pierson—violators may be fined up to $500 and face up to 60 days in jail.  News 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Smyrna Beach City Commission approved an agreement with Volusia County last week to begin bidding for an 8.4 million dollar stormwater project at Corbin Park that uses a 6 million dollar Transform386 grant to fix flooding issues. County officials will manage construction while city staff help residents, with bidding expected to take three to six months and work to span about two years.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • After a 4-2 vote on Monday, the First Step Shelter board in Daytona Beach approved a new three-year contract for Executive Director Victoria Fahlberg that keeps her $133,900 base pay and adds a $150 monthly automobile allowance—while providing termination protections. Ormond Beach Mayor Jason Leslie and Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry expressed concerns that the deal could affect city funding as legal challenges and pending agreements continue.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Volusia County Council met Tuesday to decide on a proposal to spend $4.6 million to buy over 300 acres off State Road 44 for a motocross facility; council members remain divided as some warn that using ECHO — Volusia Forever funds in a Florida wildlife corridor may risk overdevelopment while others view the project as a boost for outdoor recreation.  WESH
