  • A 42-year-old woman from Morven, Georgia, faces fraud charges for using a Bitcoin scam that stole $17,000 from a Daytona Beach man—she advised him to send a larger amount—and was arrested by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.  News 6
  • After reopening following a more than $5 million restoration project to improve public access and protect native habitat, Blue Spring State Park experienced vandalism that included graffiti on new boardwalks and unauthorized digging on banks—officials urged visitors to report any further harm.  News 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Daytona Beach will celebrate Juneteenth with a free family festival on June 14 at Cypress Park that offers live music, food trucks and cultural activities, and an awards banquet on June 19 at the Embry-Riddle Student Center to honor community leaders.   • The Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach was named No. 3 in USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards and offers two-hour dolphin and sunset tours on the Indian River Lagoon—its certified naturalists share facts about over 4,000 species while the nonprofit also runs conservation and education programs.   • Mount Bethel Baptist Institutional Church in Daytona Beach has survived two moves, multiple hurricanes, and financial challenges since its founding in 1885. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Embry-Riddle researchers are using surveys and virtual interviews to study pilot pathway programs at the Daytona Beach and Prescott campuses to learn what drives students to join these programs and improve their design — the project will begin data collection in fall and conclude by summer.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
  • Local high school students raced their custom-built electric go-karts at Daytona International Speedway on Tuesday, June 10 in a STEM event supported by FPL and NASCAR. They tested their vehicles for efficiency and gained behind-the-scenes access to the track.  FOX 35 Orlando

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Florida Department of Transportation is finalizing a buried seawall on parts of State Road A1A in Flagler and Volusia counties to protect the highway, homes and businesses from hurricanes and erosion—its design keeps the coast’s natural look.
