- ➤ After her 22-year-old son Michael was injured in a car accident on Aug. 24, 2017, Daytona Beach Shores native Cheryl Lucas started Anytime Mobile Notary to offer notary work, wedding signings and legal document processing after losing their Edgewater home to Hurricane Milton—her son helped her launch the business while she cared for him. The service now travels throughout Volusia County and continues to grow despite past hardships. Hometown News
- ➤ South Daytona is experiencing an economic upswing as new businesses open—Scooter’s Coffee is now open and Winola Farm Beef and Zaxby’s will open later while a planned commercial development was approved on a 2-acre site along S. Ridgewood. City staff will work with the property owner to set a master development agreement that supports quality retail and new jobs. Hometown News

- ➤ On July 10, a large crowd celebrated Mary McLeod Bethune's 150th birthday at Bethune-Cookman University as the renovated Mary McLeod Bethune Home reopened in Daytona after over two years of work – featuring original furnishings and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. - ➤ On July 7, the Florida Department of Education reported that Volusia County Schools earned a district grade of A by reaching 64 points in ten accountability areas and raising the share of A and B grades from 62 percent to 75 percent—a milestone not seen since the 2008 to 2009 school year. - ➤ Daytona Beach city commissioners and county officials discussed proposals at a recent meeting to allow beach driving from International Speedway Blvd. to Ocean Center and to let dogs play on the beach north of Seabreeze Blvd.—Officials will soon meet with state and federal agencies to address legal and environmental challenges — especially to protect endangered sea turtles. - ➤ The New Smyrna Beach Commission returned from summer recess by paying $150,000 for a 2.75-acre property near Turnbull Creek and set deed restrictions to keep the land in its natural state for conservation. The commission also permitted removal of four historic trees to clear a site for a separate Volusia Mosquito Control base, with the measure passing 3 to 2. Hometown News
- ➤ A new law now exempts many disaster preparedness supplies from sales tax—helping Daytona residents save money while stocking up ahead of hurricanes, wildfires and other emergencies.
