CRIME NEWS

  • Benjamin Rooney, a 13-year-old (with high-functioning autism) student from Southwestern Middle School, was last seen at 10 p.m. Sunday after leaving his home on Good Earth Drive in DeLeon Springs and his father reported him missing on Monday morning.  WESH
  • Volusia deputies are searching for 13-year-old Benjamin Rooney, a boy with autism (a Southwestern Middle School student) who was last seen (10 p.m. Sunday) by his father in DeLeon Springs and discovered missing Monday morning as his father prepared him for school.  News 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Many Central Florida students began school on Monday, August 11th—live coverage from counties such as Orange, Seminole, Volusia, Flagler and Brevard documented first day activities.  WESH
  • Embry-Riddle student researchers created a wearable robotic exoskeleton to reduce worker injuries by lessening strain on muscles and joints. They built the affordable, 3D-printed device with extra ankle control and won first place at an IEEE robotics workshop—opening paths for future upgrades.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 7, inmates at the Volusia County Correctional Facility near Daytona Beach attended the Second Chance Job Fair where employers like Sam’s Club — along with Maruti Transportation and International Tile & Stone — offered job opportunities and resume help. The program, a partnership between the county government and the Port Orange South Daytona Chamber of Commerce, has helped prepare inmates for release through educational and reentry resources.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • The Volusia Sheriff's Office started a new Behavioral Threat Unit for schools that has three school resource deputies and a lieutenant—using metal detectors and AI technology to stop threats quickly. The team will work with local schools to keep students safe and reduce disruptions.  News 6
  • Frank Rendon Park in Daytona Beach Shores is closing for repairs after hurricanes Ian and Nicole caused damage. The project includes building a new sea wall, adding an ADA accessible dune walkover, and rebuilding pavilions damaged by the storm—work that will be complete in six months to meet FEMA reimbursement requirements.  News 6
