CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities confirmed a 67-year-old man died after a shooting sparked by a fight over beer and cigarettes in a DeLand homeless camp on Monday night—detectives took 36-year-old Charles Eugene Iseman to a hospital for evaluation and charged him with second-degree murder.  FOX 35 Orlando

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Erin is tracking northward and will bring rough seas, hazardous surf and strong rip currents to Volusia County beaches this week. Local officials removed trash cans and other beach equipment to prevent damage—residents and boaters are urged to check the beach flag system and follow lifeguard instructions for safety.  Hometown News
  • Hurricane Erin is moving north in the Atlantic and produced dangerous rip currents on Florida’s east coast on Tuesday while hazardous conditions will continue through Thursday—Volusia County officials removed beach equipment and urged swimmers to stay near staffed lifeguard towers, advising residents and visitors to use the Volusia Beaches app for real-time updates. Officials will keep monitoring the storm as its outer effects impact local beach safety.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Rough surf and dangerous rip currents are forecast along our coast from today through Friday—seas will reach between 6 and 15 ft and a high surf advisory remains in effect until 11:00 Thursday evening.  WESH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Halifax Humane Society will end its contract with Volusia County and stop accepting stray and dangerous animals starting Oct. 1—after nearly 40 years of handling these cases; Volusia County will open a new intake shelter in DeLand and receive occasional help from Halifax until 2027.  News 6
  • Florida is suing textbook publishers McGraw Hill and Savvas for overcharging school districts and including content that is not in line with state rules—Attorney General James Uthmeier filed the suit on August 19, seeking up to $60.5 million in penalties; Gov. DeSantis said that if the state wins, money will go back to the schools.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
