  • Journey's End Animal Sanctuary in DeLand cares for dogs, cats, pigs, sheep and goats in a homelike setting—FOX 35 reporter David Martin visited yesterday to introduce new animal friends.  FOX 35 Orlando

CRIME NEWS

  • On September 17th, 2025, about 150 community members gathered in Edgewater to honor Officer David Jewell, who was shot off duty two days earlier at a convenience store in Ormond-by-the-Sea and whose patrol car bore floral arrangements and a painted portrait.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Edgewater residents honored slain Officer David Jewell, who was shot 24 times by 24-year-old Eduardo Machado at the Circle K on Monday, by leaving flowers, notes, and wreaths at the police department—while planning a memorial ride for next Saturday to support his family and seek answers about the tragedy.  News 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Embry-Riddle researchers are working to mimic the soaring flight of an albatross with drone technology—using weather data and machine learning to guide real-time maneuvers. They received $1.4 million from DARPA and will test the system over water to capture wind details that help the drones soar longer.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center reported at 11:11 a.m. EDT on September 17 that Tropical Storm Gabrielle is forming in the Atlantic and may strengthen into a hurricane—residents in Daytona Beach are advised to monitor local updates as the storm approaches.  WESH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Volusia County Council approved a $1.41B budget that uses a mix of flat and rolled-back millage rates for the General Fund kept at 3.2007 mills—some taxpayers could see higher bills if their property values increased. The council also criticized the budgets of constitutional officers and delayed a tax collector office renovation pending further review.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

  • World Atlas ranked two routes in Flagler and Volusia counties—State Road A1A and the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail—as some of Florida’s most scenic drives because of their ocean views and green landscapes.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Daytona Tortugas catcher Alfredo Duno was named the 2025 Most Valuable Player in the Florida State League— the 19-year-old posted a .287 batting average, 18 home runs and 95 walks while setting team records. He is expected to reach the major leagues by 2028 as a top prospect in the Reds system.  WNDB
