BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business owners in Holly Hill are bracing for coastal flooding as heavy rains and high tides push water into roads and storefronts — Danny Wilson of Wilson 4x4 uses over 100 sandbags and has a roofing company scheduled for a leak repair tomorrow while Jeremy and Jenny Craig of Copper Bottom Craft Distillery face customer access issues from water driven by passing cars. Local emergency crews are on standby to clear storm-related obstructions from drainage systems.  WESH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Showers that were expected Friday have moved inland and wet conditions continue over the weekend with high rain chances—flood watches cover Volusia and Brevard counties while coastal advisories are in effect for Volusia and Flagler. High surf and rip current warnings add to the alerts for residents.  WESH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Oct 1, Daytona Beach switched to New Hope Animal Shelter in DeLand for animal control services after a review of rising fees ended its contract with Halifax Humane Society — higher costs led to the change.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Yesterday, the City of Daytona Beach held a Main Street Arch ribbon-cutting ceremony—at the base of the arch on the east end of Main Street by Ocean Avenue—to mark its opening.  FOX 35 Orlando

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Longtime New Smyrna Beach resident Earl Wischmeier raised his home 46 inches on Normand Avenue to prevent future flooding—he spent $100,000 over three months with help from friends and lived in his garage during the work. He has now returned home and canceled his flood insurance as he finishes the remaining work.  WESH
