BUSINESS NEWS

  • Epic Theatres of West Volusia at 939 Hollywood Blvd. in Deltona will add new Lumma 4D seats that move, blow wind, spray water and shake to make watching movies more fun. The theater will finish these changes by late November and start fixing the lobby in early 2026 — a plan meant to bring more people as more watch movies at home.  Hometown News
  • Volusia County Public Library won two awards—the 2025 Libraries Mean Business Award and the 2025 Innovation Award—for its Acuity Business Pass program, which gives local entrepreneurs free access to advanced research tools. The program was developed jointly by the library and the Economic Development Division to help small businesses with market insights.  Hometown News

CRIME NEWS

  • A large iguana was thrown in the back of a patrol car on Monday morning after officers found it roaming Daytona Beach and wedged in a fence, and it now faces charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, trespassing and fleeing—an unusual event for local law enforcement.  News 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Athens Theatre in DeLand and other arts groups are facing cuts after Volusia County Council removed $611758 in cultural grants on Oct 7—Athens Theatre lost $31066 for shows and may raise ticket prices and cut scholarships for local children. The theater plans to launch a GoFundMe page to help support its productions and community programs.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Carmen Balgobin has been named 2025 Superintendent of the Year by the National Association of School Superintendents—honored for her strong leadership and commitment to bettering Volusia County Schools. Her work transformed the district into a safe, innovative learning environment that boosts student success.  Hometown News
  • Volusia County Schools held a ribbon-cutting on Oct. 3 to open the new Orange City Elementary School— a campus that honors the original school and serves over 700 students. School officials and community members praised the building for its updated technology, flexible learning spaces and improved driveways for bus and parent pick up and drop off.  Hometown News
  • Volusia County Schools opened Deltona High School’s Welding Technology program on Oct. 9 so that nearly 200 students could begin hands-on training in a high demand field — backed by business partners and a state grant. Daytona State College offers up to 25 art scholarships for veterans and their families to attend Fall, Spring and Summer classes.  Hometown News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • One year after Hurricane Milton hit, residents in South Daytona's Big Tree Village still see faint water lines on concrete poles and damage from the Category 3 storm. Many residents face slow rebuilding and financial challenges that hinder quick recovery.  FOX 35 Orlando

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daytona Beach city leaders passed a redistricting ordinance on Oct. 1 to adjust the City Commission zones after a gerrymandering lawsuit—critics like Sakhnovsky and activist Nicholson argued the process lacked public input. Commissioner Cantu also raised concerns over faulty Mosaic sidewalks that have caused injuries, and she said an agreement for repairs will go before commissioners on Oct. 15.  Hometown News
  • The New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport is planning to build a new 4,000-square-foot administration building to replace its older offices and serve as a welcoming gateway for visitors—featuring updated work areas and a flexible 500-square-foot space for meetings and events. Construction will begin early next year as part of the airport’s ongoing infrastructure improvements with 80% of the cost funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.  Hometown News

  • Dr. Wallace Thomas, an interventional pulmonologist with experience from Havana to New York, has joined AdventHealth Daytona Beach today to treat lung conditions such as asthma, COPD, and cancer—using less invasive methods that offer quicker recoveries. He will see patients at 305 Memorial Parkway, Suite 307 to help meet Volusia County’s need for better respiratory care.  Hometown News
  • Researchers at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University are building living models from human tissue to study how spaceflight affects cells and tissues. The new lab aims to develop therapies for problems like bone loss, anemia and nervous system damage—efforts that may also help treat aging and disease on Earth.  Hometown News

  • Ernie Cox of Family Lands Remembered told the Edgewater Economic Development Board that the Deering Park project is making progress with a 75,000 square foot building and water management work that includes digging lakes and monitoring culverts — steps that will ready the site for light industrial use and other developments next summer. He said cleared areas will be ready by the end of the year while work in New Smyrna Beach is set to begin in about three years.  Hometown News
