COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Volusia County Fair will run for 11 days from Nov. 6 to Nov. 16 at the fairgrounds in DeLand, offering rides, games, music, and animal shows with special discount days for students, veterans, seniors, and first responders. Event general manager Ronnie Hull said the fair, a long-standing fall tradition dating back to 1923, will mix classic attractions with new modern features.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Homeowners in the Mosaic subdivision say slippery sidewalks—caused by algae buildup and drainage issues—have led to nearly 50 falls and safety concerns, prompting a demand for repairs. The city and the developer are negotiating a cost-sharing plan that may allow improvements to begin in the next few weeks.  News 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On October 14, more than 100 Volusia County Schools teachers rallied outside a School Board meeting demanding a 2% cost-of-living raise instead of the 1.5% offer. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Volusia County government opened an animal shelter (2120 E. International Speedway Blvd. in DeLand) to care for stray, quarantined and cruelty investigation animals from unincorporated Volusia County, Oak Hill and Pierson in response to changes at Halifax Humane Society. The shelter is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday (for eligible residents) and people in other cities should call their local government for help.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
