COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rev. Bill Sharp, a longtime local pastor and trusted friend who served the community for over 70 years, died peacefully on Sept. 26 at age 94. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1 at First Presbyterian Church in New Smyrna Beach—family and community members are invited to honor his enduring legacy.  Hometown News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two Jerks Seafood in Port Orange planned to expand its seafood market into a restaurant after submitting a site plan modification on Oct. 1; city staff will meet with the developer later this month to discuss remodeling—updates include new restrooms, a kitchen, and an outdoor bar replacing the old pavilion.  Hometown News

  • On October 7, Volusia County Council cut $611,758 in cultural grants for the coming year—over 30 local arts venues now face steep funding challenges. Local cultural leaders warn the decision may force cuts in art scholarships, staffing, and public programming that benefit many families.  Hometown News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida officials warned that nearly 3 million people on SNAP could lose their food benefits in November if the shutdown continues — leaving many families, seniors, and others without needed support. The USDA told states to stop sending SNAP data to EBT vendors while some local leaders urge temporary measures to cover the gap.  News 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ryan Bazil, an IT specialist at FPL’s nuclear fleet and ERAU alum, uses aerospace technology to solve complex problems and mentor students in STEM through the FPL Drones in School initiative—he began his aerospace journey in high school and now teaches that learning from mistakes can open new doors.  Hometown News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volusia County is hosting free hazardous waste collection events for residents to safely dispose of items like old paint, solvents, batteries and pool chemicals at the Ormond Beach Public Works Facility today and at the New Smyrna Beach Public Works Facility on October 25 from 8 a.m. to noon. Residents must remain in their vehicles and present proof of county residency to participate.  Hometown News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Volusia County received Community Services Block Grant—Disaster Relief Supplemental Funding from the Florida Department of Commerce to help residents affected by Hurricane Ian by expanding food assistance programs with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and local pantries. Residents must show Volusia ID to get free food boxes at distribution events on Oct. 30 at Calvary Christian Church Dream Center in New Smyrna Beach and on Nov. 6 at Hope Place in Daytona Beach.  Hometown News

  • Residents in DeLand will join Ned Broadwater and others for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Volusia County at Earl Brown Park on Saturday, Nov. 1st; the event opens at 8 a.m. with a flower ceremony at 9 a.m. that honors those affected by Alzheimer’s—participants aim to reach a $175,000 goal with over $130,000 already raised.  Hometown News
  • Cinamon Sullivan, an uninsured woman who suffered a heart attack, spent 22 days receiving full care at AdventHealth Fish Memorial—her treatment was fully covered by the hospital and a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Today, she is home with her family—relieved that her care came without added cost.  Hometown News
  • UF Health Urology at Halifax Health announced a breakthrough in kidney stone treatment when Dr. Steven Sidelsky performed the region’s first SURE procedure using the CalyxoCVAC System—removing a 1.5 cm stone with a 99% stone-free outcome—and now the hospital offers three advanced suction techniques to reduce follow-up treatments.  Hometown News

  • Families in Daytona Beach can use tools like Find My and Family Link to set safe zones for trick-or-treating so parents receive alerts if kids wander—smart doorbells can play spooky messages to add fun to the night.  WESH

  • Aston Martin announced plans to build an 18‐story oceanfront condominium tower in Daytona Beach Shores — the venture marks its first step into high‐end real estate development. The project will bring a new luxury living option to the area, officials said.  FOX 35 Orlando

  • The historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark is undergoing a $30 million renovation that will add a 38,000‑square‑foot player development building, museum, and modern fan amenities to help both teams train and boost the venue's legacy.
