  • Lowell Lohman, a respected businessman and philanthropist who managed Type 1 diabetes since age 18, died on Oct 28 at 80 and was honored at a celebration of life held on Nov 7 at Daytona Memorial Park—family and community members gathered to remember his generous legacy.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • New Smyrna Beach mixed media artist Allen Hoss won the Best of Show award at the Halifax Art Festival held in Daytona Beach from November 1st to 2nd. The juried event raised funds for the Museum of Arts and Sciences and gave him $5,000 for his art that mixes paints with other materials — his 40-year career as an architect helped shape his work — inspiring local art fans.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

  • Dr. David Canales of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University received a $200,000 NSF grant to study chaotic spacecraft motion in the cislunar region—he will use augmented reality and reinforcement learning with knot theory to improve trajectory planning.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Central Florida tourists worry that new flight restrictions and the government shutdown might delay their return home after Port Canaveral cruises. The FAA said commercial launches will occur only from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. — and Rep. Mike Haridopolos said these delays affect more than just the space industry.  News 6
  • Volusia Sheriff's Office is hosting a food distribution event on Sunday at Daytona International Speedway from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm—SNAP recipients must bring their ID cards. Community partners have arranged a donation drop-off today from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm where items such as spaghetti, pasta sauce, and canned goods are needed.  WNDB
  • Volusia County Council is set to draft an ordinance to reallocate $600,000 in unallocated cultural grants toward food assistance amid rising costs and SNAP uncertainties—Councilman David Santiago said the funds will support major food distributors like Second Harvest and help local food pantries offer more fresh meals.  WESH
  • A government shutdown forced Friends of Canaveral to move the Colors of Canaveral fundraiser from the Seminole Rest Historic Site to Arts on Douglas — 123 Douglas St in New Smyrna Beach. The event will feature an art gallery, coastal boutique, silent auction, and kids’ activities with local artist Nancy Neel — it will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 9.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

  • The Florida High School Athletic Association released new playoff brackets for high school football with teams such as DeLand, Edgewater, Jones and Bishop Moore as top seeds — over 40 area schools will fight for the state title as the playoffs kick off next Friday.  WESH
