COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 52nd Annual Daytona Turkey Run opens today at Daytona International Speedway — running through Nov. 30 with over 5,000 collector cars on display and featuring a swap meet with more than 2,000 vendors, a car corral of classic and muscle cars, and an arts and fashion area. Daily hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., admission is $20 on the first three days and $15 on the last day with free entry for children 11 and younger, and a beer festival is scheduled for Nov. 29 from noon to 4 p.m.  Hometown News
  • Single mom Josie Reynolds moved her family from Illinois to Florida last year and is working hard to build stability for her children. Food Brings Hope Community has helped her kids adjust through the KidsZone program — with mentors like Ms. Miller supporting them as they face challenges ahead.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Teresa Torres-Anderson and Jimmy Anderson have opened their first brick-and-mortar Mama Cannoli store on S. Nova Road in South Daytona after starting with a food truck. The shop served limited hours Nov. 25–26 and will open fully Dec. 2—its grand opening will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony and over 10 flavors of cannoli along with Italian pastries and cookies.  Hometown News
  • Dredging & Marine Consultants, a Port Orange firm that works on marine projects, was named among Florida’s Top 50 emerging firms by GrowFL. The company will be honored at Hard Rock Live in February for its work on permitting, planning, and construction services.  Hometown News
  • Mercury Rising, a new coffee shop founded by local entrepreneur Jaylen Parrish, opened its brick-and-mortar location on October 20 inside Journey Church at the Dreka Theater in DeLand—serving creative drinks like Brown Eyed Girl and spiced lattes along with gluten-free baked goods. The shop operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and has quickly earned praise for offering a welcoming space for community members.  Hometown News

  • Campus Guardian Angel selected Volusia County Schools as one of three districts in Florida to pilot its new drone program — the system uses non-lethal drones that reach any part of a campus in 15 seconds to alert law enforcement during active shooter emergencies and is backed by a $557,000 Legislature allocation; the trial will begin in early 2026.  Hometown News
  • Bethune-Cookman University will launch its B-CU Futures initiative in Spring 2026, offering eight emerging degree programs—like cybersecurity, applied artificial intelligence, and esports and gaming administration—to prepare students for future jobs. Daytona State College was named among the nation’s best value colleges, ranking 3rd in Florida, 4th in the South, 6th nationwide, and 9th for affordability.  Hometown News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UF scientists have developed a test that uses detached palm leaflets to quickly see which trees may fall due to a fungal disease that causes trunk rot—this method gives results in three days instead of many months. They tested 29 palm species and found most resist the fungus, a finding that may help homeowners and landscapers choose safer palms for future planting.  Hometown News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daytona Beach is planning to change Main Street into a safer, friendlier place for residents and business owners—about 80 locals shared ideas for wider sidewalks, better lighting, and improved parking. City leaders will review the plan in December or January and expect work to start in about 18 months if funding holds.  Hometown News

  • Today, several Thanksgiving races will start in the Daytona area, including the Turkey Trot 5K at 7:30 a.m. from Landshark Bar and Grill, the NSB Gobble Wobble 5K at 9 a.m. in New Smyrna Beach, the John Boyle Thanksgiving 10-Mile and 5K in DeLand, and races in DeBary and at Daytona State College's campus—each race offering medals and a fun, active start before dinner.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
