A malfunctioning lithium-ion battery on a motorcycle sparked a storage-unit fire around 6 p.m. on the 1200 block of Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach; crews used foam and water to extinguish it, smoke reached an adjacent unit, damage was mainly to the motorcycle and no injuries were reported.

King tides and strong winds are causing coastal flooding and beach erosion in Volusia and Brevard counties, prompting Satellite Beach to close beach crossovers through Sunday and pushing water into Astor, residents can get sandbags at Lake County Fire Rescue Station 102 (3023 State Road 40) but must bring shovels.
Powerful waves have washed sand away at New Smyrna Beach, prompting Volusia County to close beach driving ramps and for the National Weather Service to extend a Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory through 2 a.m. Friday; officials say the full extent of erosion won’t be known until the tidal event ends.
