- ➤ Habitat for Humanity will unveil its Cottage Housing Initiative on Jan. 8 in New Smyrna Beach to create a small community for vulnerable seniors. The organization plans to build eight to 12 500-600 sqft low-income homes sold at cost with a zero-interest mortgage. Hometown News

- ➤ Embry-Riddle researchers at the Daytona Beach campus are developing a net mechanism to catch space debris and tow it into Earth’s atmosphere for burn-up; the project (funded by nearly $408K from NASA) began testing on Jan. 5 and aims to protect orbiting missions. - ➤ Dense fog is expected today across parts of Volusia County, including Daytona Beach, reducing visibility until about 9 a.m. Drivers should allow extra time for travel to stay safe in these conditions. WESH

- ➤ Volusia County is considering rescinding ECHO grants to the Historic Preservation Trust that owns two of Daytona Beach's oldest properties, Hotchkiss House and Lilian Place.
