  • Army Reserve Capt. Cody Khork, a Florida native, died Sunday, March 1 when a drone struck his command center in Kuwait. Friends and fellow service members remember him for his friendly nature and dedicated service.  FOX 35 Orlando

  • SpaceX launched 29 Starlink satellites from Cape Canaveral on Wednesday, Mar. 4 using the booster’s 25th flight, and the first stage landed on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas in the Atlantic.  WESH

  • Local author Dr. Michelle Lee released her second middle-grade novel, 'The Magic of Someday Soon' on March 3—drawing inspiration from Dunlawton Sugar Mill Gardens (formerly Bongoland) and charming small towns—and will host book launch events on March 7 at Novel Tea Book Shop in Ormond Beach and April 4 at Turtle and Bea Book Boutique in Edgewater.  Hometown News
  • On Tuesday, March 3, the Volusia County Council approved $571,926 for 31 cultural grants to local arts groups — limiting the program to one year. Strong public support in DeLand helped secure the vote.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

  • Marine Discovery Center offers winter birding tours in New Smyrna Beach on March 18 and April 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. Guests board from 116 N. Causeway to Disappearing Island to learn from Audubon experts about migratory birds (prices range from $37 to $55).  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VoRide, Volusia County's rideshare service, expanded on March 4 to serve North Ormond and Southeast Volusia (including New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, and Oak Hill) and now adds night service in mainland Daytona Beach. Fares begin at $2 for trips up to 5 miles and offer discounts for disabled and youth.  Hometown News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Emergency medicine physician Rajiv Bahl said central Florida is facing a measles surge as vaccination rates drop and cases rise. The CDC report shows that through Feb. 27, Florida held 10% of US cases, and officials advise vaccination + monitoring for symptoms.  WESH

  • Investor Jayson Meyer’s group Fountainhead Developers has purchased the former Wyotech Motorcycle School campus at 470 Destination Daytona Lane in Ormond Beach.
