COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volusia County's council will vote on April 1 on the future of the Ormond Beach dog program—set to end next week after drawing over 12,800 dog visitors. A local resident raised concerns because 326 off-leash incidents and 15 cleanup issues were recorded.  News 6

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Six businesses will compete in the Volusia Innovation Challenge today at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach with contests offering a $10,000 first-place prize, a $5,000 second-place prize, and a $2,000 people's choice award—attendees will vote on the people's choice winner and free parking is available nearby. Those wishing to attend must sign up by midnight March 26.  WNDB

CRIME NEWS

  • Accused murderer Derrius Bauer rejected a plea deal on Tuesday that would have reduced his prison term to fifteen years—he now faces trial for first degree murder and other charges that could send him to life in prison.  WNDB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Embry-Riddle students—McKenzie Jean-Baptiste, Michael Jordan and Omoniyi Bankole—were chosen as 2025 Patti Grace Smith Fellows and will get paid internships with top aerospace companies this summer; they also receive mentoring and up to $2,500 in educational grants.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Volusia County Council delayed talks on a rural boundary charter amendment because a new bill may limit local control; at-large candidates including Port Orange resident Mike Poniatowski and Daytona Beach Shores Mayor Nancy Miller have filed to run for council seats. Residents can dispose of tires for free on April 5 and drop off household hazardous waste on April 12 while the county asks local churches and nonprofits to host the Summer BreakSpot meal program—applications are due April 12 and the program runs from June 3 to Aug. 9.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
