CULTURE NEWS

  • Severe thunderstorms disrupted the Welcome To Rockville festival in Daytona Beach Friday evening, pausing performances for about 2.5 hours while attendees sought shelter. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Embry-Riddle took Canvas offline on May 7 to address a cybersecurity issue; the platform was restored by May 8 and showed no evidence of compromised data — the IT team will continue monitoring vendor updates.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
  • A cyberattack on Canvas has disrupted online learning for local schools and universities in Florida, and hackers have threatened to leak user data by May 12—officials urge caution on phishing emails.  News 6
  • Embry-Riddle graduate Zoey Hart earned a Fulbright Study/Research Award and will attend the University of Southampton for a one-year master’s program in space systems engineering, as announced May 8.   • Volusia County’s Marine Science Center has added a new ultrasound system after Friends of the Marine Science Center raised over $35,000+ to fund the upgrade. The equipment boosts diagnostic precision for sea turtles and other marine wildlife.  Hometown News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Council approved the purchase of River Bend Ranch, a 1,299-acre property at 1411 Osteen Maytown Road next to Deering Preserve, for $20.1 million on May 5 through the Volusia Forever program. The deal creates 2,684 acres of conserved land and expands public access for hiking and paddling.  Hometown News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Daytona Beach began work on beachfront land with concrete pilings to build a sea wall for a boardwalk expansion. The city bought a half-acre in June and plans to complete the new extension by fall — 2027 as renderings are finalized, a move aimed at revitalizing the area.  WESH
