EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, more than 4,000 students graduated at Daytona State College’s ceremony at the Ocean Center, where many earned Associate and Bachelor degrees, honors and certificates; among them Carlina Roberts became the third generation in her family to graduate.  WNDB
  • Volusia County Schools is preparing transition plans for students from the closed Pace Center for Girls. The district, partnering with Pace staff, will arrange campus tours and counselor meetings during the summer to set up individualized support ahead of the Pace Reach Program launch in fall.  Hometown News
  • Marine officer Samuel L. McManus, a father of three, graduated from Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus on May 4 and was commissioned on May 5. He will continue helping with Navy ROTC training here and plans to begin flight training in Pensacola next year (balancing family, studies, and personal loss).  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A five-month dredging project to renew sand at New Smyrna Beach is complete and crews are now removing pipes (a step to ready the beach for Memorial Day weekend). County experts say the new berm protects dunes and sea turtle nesting areas.  News 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents can sign up for a free Volusia County beach pass to enjoy no-fee beach driving and parking at 65 designated lots as the busy season kicks off on Memorial Day. Registration is fast via parkvolusia.org (using your license plate number) and in-person help is available at local offices.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
