CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday night, a 33-year-old man was stabbed 11 times near a transient camp on Findley Street and Old Mission Road in New Smyrna Beach and was airlifted to the hospital in critical but stable condition (the suspect, 31-year-old Corey Cotton, was later arrested and is held without bond).  FOX 35 Orlando
  • On Sunday near New Smyrna Beach, a 33-year-old man was stabbed 11 times during a fight at a homeless camp—Volusia County deputies arrested 27-year-old Corey Cotton for aggravated battery while the victim was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach in critical but stable condition.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Corey Cotton (27) was arrested at the scene on Sunday evening in New Smyrna Beach after he allegedly stabbed a 33-year-old man 11 times near the intersection of Findley Street and Old Mission Road in a transient camp, and officers found a blood-soaked folding knife on him while the victim was taken to hospital and is expected to recover.  WNDB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Children and teens ages 6 to 15 can join summer day camps at the Lyonia Environmental Center in Volusia County that offer live animal encounters, nature hikes, games and art activities. The camps run from June through August from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and cost between $100-$125—featuring reptile sessions, ocean lessons and field trips—designed to offer hands-on learning experiences.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

  • On Monday, a federal judge ordered the DEP to seek a federal permit and stop new septic tank permits in the Indian River Lagoon watershed from July 17 to protect manatees and their food source. The ruling also requires manatee health assessments + feeding programs with quarterly public reports.  News 6
