ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcyclist died in a crash in Osteen on May 23, and troopers closed the section of State Road 415 — at the Fort Smith Boulevard intersection — as they investigated the accident.  FOX 35 Orlando

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Volusia County beaches in Daytona Beach will draw big crowds this Memorial Day weekend as residents and visitors gather for the start of summer, and additional lifeguards with 70 towers are scheduled for extra safety. Beach Safety officials warn that rip currents can pull swimmers into deeper water—residents are urged to swim in groups and near a lifeguard.  WESH
  • The new Boater Freedom Act will take effect in July and limit law enforcement’s power to board vessels without probable cause—Memorial weekend boaters are still subject to current safety inspections and checks for impaired operation.  News 6
  • Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law that will take effect July 1—drivers who speed 100 mph or exceed the limit by 50 mph may face up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine for a first offense—and more severe penalties could follow for repeat violations.  News 6
  • Votran is changing bus schedules to help riders on May 26 and during high school graduation ceremonies at the Ocean Center from May 27 through May 31—some routes will run on a Sunday schedule while others will be detoured and service at the ITF will pause as buses adjust for the events. Limited Gold Service will operate in east Volusia and Votran’s offices will be closed on Memorial Day.  Hometown News
  • The Volusia County government will hold the 'Keep Volusia Beautiful Post-Memorial Day Cleanup' Tuesday, May 27 at 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Ponce Inlet (4589 S. Atlantic Ave) to remove waste from holiday beach activity.  WNDB
