  • Today, Daytona Beach officials have deployed 73 lifeguard towers to manage large Memorial Day crowds—and warn swimmers to be cautious of jellyfish stings and soft sand issues. Officials said there were 70 towers on Saturday and will deploy 83 on Memorial Day—as high temperatures near 88°F drawing more visitors to the shore.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews from Seminole, Volusia, Oviedo and the U.S. Forest Service battled a 15-acre brush fire near Lake Harney yesterday — bulldozers and other containment methods were used to keep residents safe as heavy rain made the smoke in Geneva more visible — and officials said no one or property was at risk.  News 6

  • DeLand police and Volusia County deputies are searching for 55-year-old Calvin Roosevelt Gilbert—accused of firing at a man outside McCabe’s Bar after buying him a $5 drink and demanding reimbursement early Saturday—after he fled in a tan 1999 Nissan Quest following identification by the victim and bar staff.  News 6
