CRIME NEWS

  • Erica Muzzy, 26, resigned as a Volusia sheriff's deputy on June 1 after her arrest on May 31 for using a counterfeit license plate reading "CHASEM3" on her motorcycle in Deltona—authorities also discovered a social media account showing her reckless stunt riding on public roads.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • A Deltona man named Jalen Vallejos was arrested by the Volusia Sheriff's Office for allegedly stalking his ex-girlfriend after a deputy saw him in a ski mask and gloves between Sunday night and Monday morning—he was found with burglary tools in his pickup truck.  WNDB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A massive Sahara dust plume from the desert is set to reach parts of the southern U.S. including Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi later this week after already causing sneezing and coughing in the Caribbean—experts warn it may also suppress hurricane formation.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Experts warn that the 2025 hurricane season could be intense as a review of 2024 shows Hurricane Debby hit Steinhatchee on Aug. 5 with 80 mph winds, Hurricane Helene struck Perry on Sept. 26 with 140 mph winds, and Hurricane Milton brought 16.5 inches of rain to Ormond Beach while Orlando saw gusts up to 87 mph—causing power outages and flight cancellations. Local officials stressed extra caution as residents recall the heavy impacts from last season.  WESH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Volusia County Marine Science Center in New Smyrna Beach will reopen Tuesday, June 24th—after a nine‐month closure—with $4.2 million invested in renovations such as a new multipurpose educational building, an artificial reef exhibit, updated aquarium quarantine areas, living shoreline displays, and a working coral lab. The county said that ticket prices will remain $8 standard, $7 for seniors, and $5 for children—while toddlers still get free entry—and annual passes will be extended for those affected by the closure.  WNDB
