CRIME NEWS

  • On June 4, police dropped charges against 22-year-old Paul Wert after he was arrested while waiting for a ride; a viral video of the arrest brought criticism and led to officer Daniel Rippeon being placed on leave and then separated from his job on June 5—officials say more details will be shared as the investigation continues.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Two 17-year-olds were arrested after a 19-year-old man was shot in the face near High Sense Smoke Shop in Deltona on Thursday—Geiziel Vazquez faces charges for firearm possession by a minor and carrying a concealed firearm while his younger brother Marco Barillas is charged with tampering with evidence, firearm possession by a minor, and violating probation as the victim remains in critical condition.  News 6
  • Deputies arrested two 17-year-olds after a 19-year-old was shot in the face in Deltona on Thursday night when they responded at 6:46 p.m. to a parking lot shooting at 2820 Howland Blvd that left the victim in critical condition—one teen faces charges for possessing and carrying a concealed firearm while the other is charged with tampering with evidence and violating probation, and the investigation is ongoing.  WESH
  • Two 17-year-olds from Deltona were arrested after a dispute outside the High Sense Smoke Shop parking lot on Thursday night escalated into a shooting in which a 19-year-old was shot in the face and taken to a local hospital, with Geiziel Vazquez facing charges for possession of a firearm by a minor and carrying a concealed firearm and Marco Barillas charged with evidence tampering, firearm possession by a minor, and probation violation.  WNDB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daytona Beach is repairing the nearly 100-year-old Main Street Arch and replacing 14 staircases and four ADA ramps along the boardwalk, with the stairs work having begun on June 2 and arch repairs set to finish this summer. The city also plans to extend the boardwalk 295 feet from Breakers Oceanfront Park to Harvey Avenue—pending design approval—and the project will boost access in the area.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

  • NOAA warned of 10 beach dangers — rip currents, lightning, heat and more — as lifeguards at Volusia County beaches urge swimmers to follow safety guidelines this summer.
