  • Robert Wittman, a former FBI special agent who recovered over $300 million in stolen art, will speak at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 in Room 119 at Daytona State College to explain how art crime works and share details of cases like the theft of a famous Winston Churchill portrait—his talk is part of the Southeast Museum of Photography speaker series.  Hometown News

  • Bethune-Cookman University is hosting The Big Give Back to celebrate Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune’s 150th birthday and will collect donations online, by phone, or in person at the Doran Building—raising $200,000 to support scholarships and programs. Daytona State College EMS students ranked among the best in Florida with a 79% first-attempt pass rate on National Registry exams—placing DSC fifth among 44 paramedic programs and 20th among 58 emergency technician programs statewide.  Hometown News
  • Embry-Riddle researchers have been investigating a method using bubbly water curtains to reduce the 140 decibel noise from fighter jets taking off from aircraft carriers, and the project—funded by a half-million-dollar grant from the Office of Naval Research—will next move from computational modeling to physical testing with Virginia Tech+ experts. The team aims to offer a noise mitigation solution without redesigning aircraft or engine configurations.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Volusia County Correctional Facility, inmates start a barber training program designed to help them learn haircut techniques and customer service—taught by instructor Angelo Ortiz in partnership with Daytona State College to complete licensing requirements after release. The program, which began on May 5, is part of a broader initiative led by County Councilman Matt Reinhart to offer career training and lower jail costs.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Two Osceola County immigrants returned to Florida after ICE transferred them without warning to a Texas deportation facility, and a local law firm called the action unjust + both immigrants had no criminal records + local families now worry that similar unfair detentions may happen again.  FOX 35 Orlando

HEALTH NEWS

  • Complete Health began expanding its Ormond Beach East location at 77 W. Granada Blvd to add five exam rooms, more doctor offices, and a bigger waiting area—meant to help patients get care and give staff a better work setting.
