CULTURE NEWS

  • Juneteenth celebrations will happen in Daytona Beach to honor Black history and local heroes. The Hometown Heroes Awards Banquet is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Embry-Riddle’s Mori Hosseini Student Center — a Saturday event at Master's Domain Church with free food and music and the Miss Juneteenth Volusia County Pageant in New Smyrna Beach will follow.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Monday, Florida’s regular gas price average fell below $3 per gallon to $2.945, a 15 cent drop from last month and 30 cents lower than last year—regional prices range from $2.80 in Panama City to $3.11 in West Palm Beach.  News 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Embry-Riddle professor Elizabeth Mathews was honored at a June 5 ceremony in Brussels with the Flight Safety Foundation's Safety Forum Award for her 32-year work on the role of language in aviation safety. Her Mathews-led research has helped improve training courses on the Daytona Beach campus and will guide new efforts to make flying safer.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents have more time to apply to serve on the Volusia County Charter Review Commission as the deadline extends from June 30 to 5 p.m. on July 18 and the County Council will choose 15 members on August 5—applicants must be registered voters living in Volusia County.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
