ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Recent beach tragedies have raised warnings against rip currents—a 10-year-old remains missing near Destin and a father died at Fort Lauderdale Beach while trying to save his daughter—while rescue teams have saved over 700 swimmers and Director Tammy Malphurs urges swimmers to stay calm and swim parallel to shore if caught in a rip current.  WESH

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, a Texas man named Zachary Miller fired rounds at another vehicle on I-4 near Daytona Beach during a road-rage incident and later confessed to his actions, leading to his arrest on charges including discharging a firearm from a vehicle, missile into a dwelling & attempted felony murder.  FOX 35 Orlando

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local leaders are working to improve roads and sidewalks around Osteen Elementary after Hurricane Milton caused flooding last fall. The county and school district raised the sidewalks with gravel — and they plan to expand the retention pond while keeping the project within budget.  WESH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Earlier this week, severe storms produced an unusual surge in positive lightning strikes that sparked fires and damaged several homes near Daytona Beach—data showed these rare strikes jumped from 5-10% to about 30% due to dry air aloft and fast-developing storms.   • Twelve local government employees graduated from the Flagler County Local Government Leadership Academy on June 12th at the Sheriff’s Office Operations Center — a program organized with Daytona State College that taught budgeting, risk management, and customer service over four months — and received certificates of completion.  WNDB

  • The Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Program is offering free or low-cost mammogram screenings today in Volusia County at the Florida Department of Health building in Daytona Beach at 8:30 a.m.—walk-ins are welcome.  WESH
