  • Volusia’s Silent Book Club meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Abbey Bar (117 N. Woodland Blvd.) where quiet readers bring their own books and share recommendations (its latest meeting had 20 attendees helping boost the bar’s business).  Hometown News

  • Brown & Brown of Daytona Beach will acquire RSC Topco Inc., owner of Accession Risk Management Group in Boston, for $9.825 billion. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter and is subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals.  Hometown News
  • Angie Gonzalez opened Revive Salt Lounge in Daytona Beach Shores on June 3 to provide yoga, salt therapy and infrared sauna treatment in honor of her late mother who suffered from lung problems. The business will host its grand opening on Saturday, June 28 from 2 to 5 p.m.—with drinks, light bites and music as it looks to add more treatments in the future.  Hometown News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Researchers at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach are testing bubbly water to reduce the loud noise of fighter jets taking off. The project—funded by the Office of Naval Research—will have the team work with Virginia Tech to see if water curtains can cut the noise without changing engine designs.  Hometown News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City commissioners purchased a half-acre oceanfront lot for $2.2 million on June 18 to gain control of the beach area and move forward with extending the Boardwalk—helping support plans for a new Señor Frog’s restaurant and a potential boutique hotel. The move follows previous discussions and aims to spur further waterfront development.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Last year, Volusia County property values reached a record high of about $104.5 billion with a 6.9% gain over 2023, as county officials noted during a June 10 forum at Daytona Beach International Airport. Officials forecast that values will rise to roughly $108.5 billion in 2025 and said work-from-home trends have boosted the market despite appraisal challenges and coastal risks from global warming.  Hometown News
