ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Jake Rosencranz—a 29-year-old man from Colorado on his honeymoon—was struck by lightning in shallow water at New Smyrna Beach Friday and died despite emergency responders' efforts, with officials noting that storm conditions made a lightning strike near shore unlikely.  WNDB

CRIME NEWS

  • Volusia County deputies arrested a naked man on June 24th for allegedly breaking into a car after body camera footage showed him in his birthday suit.  FOX 35 Orlando

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Embry-Riddle undergraduates won a top award at IEEE SoutheastCon for developing a smart system that learns to block cyberattacks like a guard dog. The team used a method called dueling deep Q-learning (which helps the system decide what is dangerous) to earn recognition among 250 papers.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Port Orange City Council approved an agreement on June 17 for police to serve as School Resource Officers at Creekside and Silver Sands middle schools—this five-year deal will begin with the 2025-26 school year and add about $76,000 to the city's annual budget with the school district reimbursing half the cost.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
