COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bob Davis—a longtime leader in Daytona Beach tourism—died on July 13th at age 87 after a battle with cancer. Local officials and hospitality professionals expressed deep sorrow on social media and praised his strong work in community education.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A 44-year-old man in Volusia County waved a handgun at a driver on Turnbull Bay Road on Friday evening and was arrested on charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence—deputies said he repeatedly reached into his vehicle despite orders to keep his hands visible.  News 6
  • Volusia County law enforcement began Operation Southern Slow Down on July 14 using Florida’s new super speeder law and already arrested a driver for exceeding 100 mph — an effort to curb dangerous speeding — and will continue targeting reckless drivers until July 19.  News 6
  • A Daytona Beach resident, 36-year-old Andrew Atkerson, was arrested last week by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office on charges of grand theft and probation violation after a homeowner spotted a rental truck leaving a construction site in Palm Coast’s E Section with an air conditioning condenser missing.  WNDB

  • Seminole County officials have installed lightning detectors in five major parks to protect citizens after lightning killed a man in New Smyrna Beach and blew up a barge in Sanford on the Fourth — a measure to warn against outdoor dangers — while Longwood has also set up detectors at two parks.  WESH
