  • South Daytona Police said a battery incident occurred at the Red-Carpet Inn — a 70-year-old woman collapsed into a pool of blood and was rushed to Halifax Health in critical condition — and a person of interest has been identified while officials continue investigating.  WESH
  • Two men convicted of murdering six people over an Xbox in 2004 are asking a Volusia County judge to separate their cases—she has not made a final decision yet.  FOX 35 Orlando

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Central Florida is experiencing a dangerous heat wave—driven by a high-pressure ridge over the Atlantic—that brings temperatures from 96 to 100 inland and lower 90s on the beaches with heat index values up to 115, and Monday is forecast to peak near 100 inland.  FOX 35 Orlando

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 22, the Volusia County Council approved funding for lift station upgrades in Daytona Beach and design services for a stormwater master plan update in New Smyrna Beach — moves aimed at reducing flood risk and modernizing aging utilities with federal HUD recovery funds. The council also began contract negotiations for watershed management and drainage projects that will guide future improvements in vulnerable areas.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
