CRIME NEWS

  • Since early June, Volusia County deputies increased patrols on U.S. 17, State Road 11 and State Road 40 after a series of deadly crashes—including one that claimed a deputy’s daughter—and have since issued 117 tickets, 28 warnings and 11 criminal citations while promising to keep patrolling until road conditions improve.  News 6
  • Ronnie Kersey, 52, is wanted for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after he pepper-sprayed & stabbed another man at 1200 Valencia Ave on July 30, leaving the victim with injuries to an arm and a finger; authorities ask anyone with information to call 386-248-1777 or 911 in an emergency.  WESH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 30th, the Volusia County School Board unanimously approved a new cell phone policy that requires all phones to be off or set to airplane mode during the school day—this change follows a new state law banning student cell phone use.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Since 2001, Volusia County's Half-Cent Sales Tax has raised funds for school improvements as money grew from about $40 million to over $64 million in 2023-24; projects include new sports courts and classroom fixes at schools like DeLand High and Orange City Elementary.
