CRIME NEWS

  • Since July 1, Florida Highway Patrol officers have arrested 55 drivers across Central Florida for dangerous excessive speeding violations—some in Seminole County on I-4—and drivers now face charges that include jail time, fines, and possible vehicle impoundment.  News 6

ECONOMY NEWS

  • FPL asked the Public Service Commission to consider a rate hike that would add nearly $10B to revenue and cause electric bills to rise by about 20% over the next four years (raising Northwest customers' costs from $3.50 to $8.39 monthly and higher elsewhere). The 10-day hearing on the request will begin Aug 11.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Volusia County schools will add ZeroEyes, an artificial intelligence system that uses existing cameras to scan for guns and alert law enforcement when a potential threat is detected. The school system will spend about $50,000 per year on this technology to help keep students safe.  News 6

  • County council members approved Tuesday, August 5 the next phase for a 350-acre motocross park in Volusia County amid public opposition and environmental concerns.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Volusia County Council appointed 15 members to the Charter Review Commission to review and propose charter amendments for a 2026 vote. The commission— which includes former sheriff Ben Johnson— will hold its first meeting at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Daytona Beach International Airport.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
