ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A lightning strike set off a fire at Lake Forest Apartments on Jimmy Ann Drive — forcing nine residents out while firefighters extinguished flames and the Red Cross provided assistance, according to the Daytona Beach Fire Department.  FOX 35 Orlando

BUSINESS NEWS

  • JetBlue is set to return to Daytona Beach International Airport after nearly seven years when it will begin daily flights on December 4 to Boston and New York’s JFK with fares starting at $59 and blackout dates from December 18 to January 5. The airline will add more flights from other Florida cities to international destinations in Central America and the Caribbean—offering locals more travel choices.  WNDB

  • A Silver Alert was issued after Ronald Mueller, 84—who has dementia—left his Orange City apartment suddenly in his 2018 Black Jeep Cherokee when he said he wanted to visit his son in New Jersey and was last seen westbound along SR-207 East I-95 just before 6:30 p.m.  News 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. District Judge Carlos Mendoza ruled that a key part of the 2023 school book law was unconstitutional—siding with publishers and authors when libraries removed books for mentioning sexual content—and said the law did not let officials review a work's overall value.  FOX 35 Orlando

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • FDOT is building a buried seawall and new sidewalk ramps along A1A in Ormond to protect the shoreline and make roads safer, with work that started in 2024 and is set to finish in fall; Andy Romano Beachfront Park will soon charge non-residents $20 per day while residents park for free—city officials expect this change to improve parking management.  Hometown News
  • A federal judge ruled on August 13 that part of Florida’s book ban law is too unclear—its rules about describing sexual conduct are not specific—so school libraries must keep some books on their shelves. State officials will appeal the decision while reviews of books continue when parents object.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Seminole County mother who was 20 weeks pregnant filed a lawsuit against Keely Farms Dairy in New Smyrna Beach after her toddler was hospitalized for 10 days and she lost her unborn baby from a severe bacterial infection caused by raw milk. Her lawsuit claims the milk was mislabeled as calf feed and that a store clerk said it was safe to drink — officials note similar illnesses have been reported.  FOX 35 Orlando
