COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Travelers arriving at Daytona Beach International Airport this weekend will face heavy traffic from race events at Daytona International Speedway on Friday, Aug 22 and Saturday, Aug 23 with road closures on Midway Avenue for the Saturday race. Votran bus routes will adjust service on both days—buses will skip certain stops and use alternate routes to help ease delays.  Hometown News

CRIME NEWS

  • DeLand police have arrested 36 year old Charles Iseman on a second degree murder charge after he shot a 67 year old man at a Dollar General on N. Spring Garden Ave at about 10:30 p.m. Monday following an argument over beer and cigarettes near a homeless camp—he is held in Volusia County Jail without bond.  WNDB
  • An Atlanta woman, 47-year-old Lakesha Heard, was extradited to Volusia County after a local resident deposited $9,300 into a Bitcoin ATM following a scam involving a fake sheriff’s lieutenant—she now faces grand theft and organized fraud charges with a $25,000 bond.  News 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge ruled that a state law requiring teachers to use only students’ biological pronouns hurts teachers’ rights — two Florida teachers won their lawsuit. The judge said the law changes job terms, no damages were given and courts will review the case further.  WNDB
  • Tomoka Farms Road from West International Speedway Boulevard to State Road 44 has been renamed Sheriff James Tucker Memorial Road to honor the late sheriff who hired the first Black and woman deputies in Volusia County. A marker was unveiled Tuesday near Shunz Road—his legacy continues to inspire service in Daytona Beach.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Volusia County Council voted 5—2 on a proposal that allows horseback riding on county-managed beaches in Ormond-by-the-Sea and Ormond Beach. Officials will work out permit rules, parking changes, and waste management for the horses as they plan the pilot program.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Florida property owners in Volusia and Flagler received their TRIM notices on Aug. 18 and can challenge high property tax assessments if they believe errors have been made. Appeals must be filed within 25 days—with deadlines on Sept. 12 for Volusia and Sept. 15 for Flagler, fees of $30 and $50 apply, and success rates remain low.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
