  • Halifax Humane Society is hosting free pet adoptions today and tomorrow from noon to 6 p.m. at its Lohman Pet Adoption Center at 2364 LPGA Blvd in Daytona Beach. The event offers vet check-ups, shots, microchipping, and spay/neuter care — and the society aims to find homes for 100 pets with food trucks, live music, and face painting for kids.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

  • Bliss Beach at 3218 S. Atlantic Ave in Daytona Beach Shores reopened Aug. 4 after Hurricane Milton damaged Bruno’s Pizzeria, and owners Lisa Walker and Shawn Lockhart will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Aug. 26 to mark the upgrade—with a new menu that features made-to-order pizza, mocktails, and croffles.  Hometown News

  • Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins held a news conference in California at Stockton Metropolitan Airport to explain plans for extraditing Harjinder Singh, a semitruck driver accused of making an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike that caused a crash killing three people.  News 6

  • Experts warn that Hurricane Erin is causing damage along Florida’s coast and may wash out sea turtle nests—putting eggs at risk from strong waves and high tides.  FOX 35 Orlando

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Volusia County Council hired Gus Zambrano as assistant county manager to lead special projects, including recovery work for Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Milton, after a 7-0 vote on Aug. 19. Zambrano, 61, left his role in Hollywood and now lives in Port Orange with his family—he said he listens to residents to solve government problems.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida banned the sale of 7-hydroxymitragynine—also known as 7-OH—by issuing an emergency order on Aug. 13 after a rise in overdose calls and addiction warnings. Officials say the temporary ban awaits legislative action and stress that unregulated use may lead to severe withdrawal and overdose risks.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Volusia Recovery Alliance, named Nonprofit of the Year 2024, must leave its space at 454 S. Yonge St. in Ormond Beach when the building is sold and is seeking a new 5,000 square foot location in East Volusia that is near a bus stop for its peer-driven recovery services. The agency will also host its seventh annual Overdose Awareness and Remembrance Day on Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Salvation Army in Daytona Beach at 10 a.m.  Hometown News
