ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two people were injured and taken to Halifax Hospital after a small plane crashed around 10:30 a.m. Friday near New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport — area roads were closed as fire and police units responded.  WESH
  • On Friday morning at 10:30 a.m., a small plane crashed just outside New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport— injuring two people who were taken to a hospital and leading to a brief closure before the airport reopened.  News 6

CRIME NEWS

  • Volusia County sheriff's detectives investigated a fake newspaper advertisement in Daytona Beach that misused the name of A.G. Pifer Construction—using an incorrect 850 phone number and omitting a required state certification—and was reported by owner Anthony Gregg Pifer after a friend spotted the ad in the Sunday, Aug. 17 edition.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Patchy fog is lowering visibility this morning— a stalled front will bring scattered rain and thunderstorms with highs in the low 90s, and rain is expected to increase later today and into Labor Day weekend, with totals of 1 to 4 inches and a chance of localized flooding in parts of Central Florida.  WESH

  • Dan Diessner, executive director for the Center for Aerospace Resilient Systems at Embry-Riddle, was named a voting member of the new FAA Civil Aviation Cybersecurity Aviation Rulemaking Committee. He will serve for 24 months—helping set cybersecurity rules for airplanes, airports, and air traffic systems.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

HEALTH NEWS

  • A New Smyrna Beach nurse fixed years of heart rhythm problems with a tiny, leadless pacemaker at Halifax Health—she said the device stopped her fainting spells and helped her feel better at work. This life-saving treatment allowed her to regain energy and overcome chronic fatigue from her condition.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
