CRIME NEWS

  • Nearly a dozen people faced criminal charges after a six‐month investigation called Operation Van Diesel uncovered 350 diesel fuel thefts worth $650,000 from 70 locations across 13 counties—investigators said seven of the accused were in the U.S. illegally.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • A 41-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after he shot a woman who mistakenly came to his driveway—he twisted her arm before firing at her and another person as they fled in a vehicle on Aug. 31, police said.  FOX 35 Orlando

CULTURE NEWS

  • Daytona Biketoberfest will run from Oct. 16-19 and will feature races at Daytona International Speedway, live music, vendor swap meets, and food and drink specials at various local venues. The four-day motorcycle event is expected to draw around 100000 fans to Daytona Beach and nearby areas.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • During the summer, Embry-Riddle undergrad students worked on machine learning algorithms for detecting spoofing attacks on drones in a 10‑week NSF REU program led by Dr. Laxima Niure Kandel at the Daytona Beach Campus—three students gained key skills in signal analysis and cybersecurity—preparing them for future careers.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City commissioners asked Daytona Beach businesses to remove vulgar T-shirts and phallic symbol souvenirs from store windows along Main Street and State Road A1A to help keep the town family friendly— the measure was approved on Sept. 3 and was sent to local tourism and retail groups for support. Local residents and shopkeepers shared mixed views on whether the change will boost the area’s appeal for families.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • FDOT officials said repairs on eastbound I-4 at Mile Marker 130—causing backups in Volusia County—have slowed traffic. They advised drivers to stay left when reaching I-95 and to keep right when turning onto S.R. 400 to avoid further delays.  WESH
