- ➤ Volusia County lifeguards warned that 9-foot waves and high rip currents are creating dangerous surf conditions with hundreds of rescues and a recent drowning, and they advised swimmers to stay near staffed towers as conditions will remain rough through Tuesday—with some improvement by midweek. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hurricane Humberto was downgraded to a Category 3 storm and is expected to become a strong extratropical system today over the Atlantic, causing dangerous surf and rip currents along the U.S. East Coast—no coastal warnings are in effect. Swells from the storm will affect the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Bermuda, and U.S. beaches may see rough conditions starting Monday as Tropical Storm Imelda moves away from the coast. - ➤ Dozens of young sea turtles are stranded on Volusia County beaches today due to rough surf from Tropical Storm Imelda — wildlife rescuers are planning to rescue the animals and return them to safer waters. FOX 35 Orlando
- ➤ Today, rough surf from Hurricane Imelda battered Daytona Beach Shores—washing away sand dunes, closing beach driving and prompting about 15 rescues since Saturday as local surfers stayed out of the dangerous water. Officials warned that rip current risks will remain high next week. WESH

- ➤ Today nearly 30 new Florida laws took effect that make penalties tougher for crimes like fleeing police and tampering with monitoring devices and also change rules for land use, flood warnings, and foster home licensing.
