- ➤ City and county leaders in Daytona Beach are reviewing a plan for a new dog-friendly beach that would designate one of three coastal stretches from Williams Avenue to Seabreeze Avenue, the Hartford approach, or a section between Zelda and Seabreeze for pets. The council will vote on the measure soon — it follows the success of a similar zone in Ormond Beach and aims to support rising pet visits and tourism. FOX 35 Orlando

- ➤ Volusia County Council approved a $38.36M contract on Tuesday with Wharton-Smith to build a new 55,000 square foot Sheriff's Office headquarters near DeLand Municipal Airport on North Woodland Boulevard—this two-story facility will include parking for 500 vehicles and a backup for the county’s 911 system while county officials work to secure a state grant to cover the funding gap. - ➤ Flagler County mourned Deputy County Administrator Jorge Salinas who died Saturday in a hit-and-run crash in DeBary that killed his wife and a motorcyclist—county leaders praised his work on major beach and coastal projects while investigators searched for the driver. WESH
- ➤ On Tuesday, the Volusia County Council approved nearly $50 million in grants from federal funds under the Transform386 program to improve flood defenses and upgrade stormwater systems — projects that will add new drainage systems and acquire key properties to reduce future flooding. - ➤ An appeals court in Florida ruled on October 2 that the smell of marijuana alone does not give police probable cause for a search - officers now must show extra evidence like visible impairment or drug paraphernalia to justify a search. WNDB
- ➤ A Florida lawmaker filed a bill on Oct. 7 that would require every public college and state university to rename one roadway after the slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk—state funds would be withheld from any institution that fails to comply within 90 days.
