  • Daytona Beach police officers captured a massive iguana roaming near a home—residents reported the animal earlier—and secured it in a patrol car.  FOX 35 Orlando

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Publix announced that customers were allowed to openly carry firearms in its Florida stores as of Sept. 25 following a landmark court ruling that found the gun ban unconstitutional — the company said local police will be called if a customer creates a threatening scene.  News 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Volusia County Council voted to withdraw $611,000 in cultural arts grants for nearly three dozen local organizations after a debate over drag performances—local arts leaders warned the decision may risk budgets and force some smaller groups to close. Arts leaders stressed that the funding cut could harm theaters, museums, and community programs that depend on this support.  FOX 35 Orlando

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Embry-Riddle students used the U.S. State Department's Critical Language Scholarship Program and a Defense Department-funded Boren Award to study Russian, Korean, and Indonesian last summer—each program helps boost their language skills for future military and government careers.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

  • Volusia County Council voted to revive an ordinance allowing dogs on about 1.7 miles of Daytona Beach between Williams Avenue and Seabreeze Boulevard—officials said Daytona Dog Beach Inc. will cover start-up costs while rules and safety measures are planned before a final vote.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
