CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hub on Canal faces challenges after the Volusia County Council cut cultural grants—Jennifer Marano said the gallery may see fewer programs unless new funding is found. The organization plans to explore other sources to support its art offerings.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

  • On Wednesday, business and civic leaders took part in the Principal for a Day program at schools across Volusia County—organized by the Futures Foundation—to tour school operations and discuss daily challenges, while FOX 35’s John Brown visited Sweetwater Elementary in Port Orange.  FOX 35 Orlando

  • A Gotha family encountered a bear near their porch on Sunday night at 10 o'clock — the doorbell camera captured the animal sniffing around garbage cans as it moved away while officials warned that unsecured food sources can attract bears.  News 6
  • Dr. Rob Eicher and Madison Croker at Embry-Riddle published a study that shows revised hurricane forecast graphics with numerical probabilities help Florida residents understand the risks of storm intensification. They surveyed over a thousand locals and weather experts to find that adding numbers to the cone of uncertainty improves public awareness — a key step as warming seas increase rapid intensification risks.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local nonprofits in Central Florida said demand for aid grew as fears of a federal government shutdown strained services for vulnerable residents—officials warn that help will need to increase if the shutdown occurs.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Daytona Beach's City Island Recreation Center (83-year-old building) on Orange Avenue east of Beach Street is very deteriorated; city commissioners will soon decide to demolish it and turn the site into a park (planned as a new park) later this year.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Drug Enforcement Administration is partnering with local law enforcement to host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday so Daytona Beach residents can safely dispose of unneeded medications — a program aimed at reducing drug misuse. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The 83-year-old City Island Recreation Center has been closed for 13 years and its condition is worsening, leaving many to expect it may soon face demolition — further review of its future is underway.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Renovations at Jackie Robinson Ballpark near Daytona Beach are nearly complete as crews modernize the historic stadium with a new player development center, clubhouses, indoor batting cages and upgraded amenities — a $30M project expected to finish by spring — and the Daytona Tortugas will not play there this season.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • NASCAR announced that the Daytona 500 will move off Presidents’ Day weekend and will be held on Feb. 21, 2027 — the change avoids a conflict with Super Bowl LXI and allows race fans a dedicated weekend.
