Good morning, Daytona Beach. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 26th of October.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Melissa is a major Category 3 storm intensifying in the Caribbean with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and is expected to possibly become a Category 5 before making landfall in Jamaica and Cuba—Daytona Beach experiences gusty winds of 24 to 30 mph and a high surf advisory that heightens rip current risks. This weather is being closely watched as warm waters fuel the storm's power and could impact the region over the next few days.  WESH
  • Local meteorologists tracking Hurricane Melissa have released updated maps and models that show an active hurricane season with projections of 13 to 19 named storms and 3 to 6 major hurricanes—officials urge Daytona Beach residents to prepare emergency kits and review evacuation plans. Local leaders stress that new residents should be ready as recent floods and repeated storm damage highlight the ongoing risks.  WESH
  • Hurricane Melissa is forecast to rapidly intensify in the Caribbean and could reach CAT-5 status — it is expected to make landfall in Jamaica Monday night into Tuesday. Coastal communities in Daytona Beach remain under a high surf advisory with rough seas and rising rip current risks as rain chances increase for the workweek.  WESH
