COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents lined up at Daytona International Speedway to get free food and supplies in response to a government pause on SNAP benefits that affected 38,000 families. Organizers prepared 5,000 food bundles from over 200,000 pounds of food collected — they will continue offering aid to those in need.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • The Neighborhood Center at The Bridge in DeLand shifted its focus Monday night from feeding residents to providing warm shelter—volunteers set up individual cots with blankets and pillows—and will open its doors at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to house even more people.  WESH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus honored its rich military past when F35 instructor Capt. Ian Mehl returned and his younger brother 2nd Lt. David Mehl, a recent graduate, is set for combat pilot training this spring. The university has trained military leaders since World War II—its ROTC programs continue to shape top aviators.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
  • Zev Cohen and Associates, an Ormond Beach firm, donated $20,000 to the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet to enhance its bald eagle exhibit and expand public education about the resident birds Liberty and Freedom. The donation will fund projects like adding a clear roof to protect the eagles and incorporating an interactive display—featuring a life-sized eagle nest model and new signage—to help visitors learn about eagle behavior.  Hometown News

  • The DeBary City Council honored eight local veterans by displaying banners on lamp posts outside City Hall as part of a Veterans Day tribute—each honoree or their family will receive the banner after November ends.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
