  • The Hunt family explained how Food Brings Hope Community — which gives fresh food and tutoring through its programs — helped them overcome tough times and celebrate their holiday traditions.   • Volusia County opened a 1.7 mile dog-friendly section of Daytona Beach on Dec 1, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec 3, at University Boulevard Beach Park—visitors must follow the county’s dog-beach rules.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • After back surgery and an ankle injury stopped Daisy Lopez from working last year, she found hope at FBH Community Fresh Markets at the Dickerson Center when a neighbor referred her to the program—she is now healing, has rediscovered her passion for painting, and sees that her community cares.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • JetBlue Airways will return to Daytona Beach International Airport on Dec. 4 after a seven-year absence, offering daily nonstop flights from New York and Boston. The first flight from New York will arrive at 9:23 a.m.—a welcome event that will include a water cannon salute and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Daytona Beach Museum of Arts & Sciences will receive a new building and a new name after a $150 million donation from Cici and Hyatt Brown — officials will announce plans soon — as the museum begins its update.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Florida Department of Health issued a 60-day rabies alert in part of DeLand after an unvaccinated cat tested positive on November 18; the alert covers areas from Voorhis Avenue — New Hampshire Avenue, South Garfield Avenue and South High Street and urges residents and visitors to avoid contact with wild animals.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
  • Embry-Riddle researchers are testing two safe methods to help people breathe better by using beet juice shots and a device that builds diaphragm strength. The clinical trial—funded by a $538,000 NIH grant—will involve 80 young adults to study ways to aid patients, pilots and others in low-oxygen conditions.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
