COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Dec. 19–31, community events fill our area; Saturday, Dec. 20 hosts pet clinics in Deltona, DeLand, and Orange City, plus family nature programs at Lyonia Environmental Center and historical museum tours in DeLand. Daytona Beach International Airport greets visitors with holiday décor on Dec. 19 and Dec. 22–23.  Hometown News
  • Volunteers with Dress a Girl Around the World participated in Christmas Under the Palms last weekend in Edgewater, displaying clothing made for girls in need worldwide. The group, including members from Daytona Beach (and surrounding areas), seeks fabric donations and sewist help to keep its mission going.  Hometown News
  • Volusia County Libraries announce holiday schedule changes with closures on Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1, 2, and early closures on Dec. 24 and 31. Branches across the area host diverse programs — from Edgewater's book talk today to maker sessions, storytimes, crafts, and family literacy workshops throughout December.  Hometown News
  • FBH Community’s KidsZone helped children at Bunnell Elementary cope with loss and celebrate hands-on STEM lessons as their supportive family prepared for the holiday season. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Embry-Riddle professor Dr. Aroh Barjatya (a lab director) received NASA’s Outstanding Public Leadership Medal for leading a mission that launched six sounding rockets during solar eclipses in Oct. 2023 and April. The project measured changes at White Sands and Wallops, earning praise from NASA and peers.  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
  • Five women in a cosmetology program at the Volusia County Correctional Facility recently finished training that connects them with Daytona State College for state licensure, while county officials announced an inmate farm program—designed to produce seasonal crops for inmate meals—that will break ground in January.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Phillips halted the planned demolition of his Tir na nOg Irish Pub by filing an injunction on Dec. 16, causing city staff to remove the proposal from the Dec. 17 meeting as part of ongoing corridor revitalization.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • AdventHealth has expanded its cancer care network through seven hospitals and new technology to speed up treatment for about 5,000 patients a year. The improved facilities in East Florida, including at AdventHealth Daytona Beach, help neighbors get advanced care closer to home — meeting rising community needs.  Hometown News
  • Halifax Health and partners are hosting a variety of free support groups and counseling sessions this week, covering mental and behavioral health, breastfeeding, and addiction recovery.
