- ➤ The Catholic Church of the Epiphany in Port Orange is collecting new, closed-toe shoes for children in the PETALS program during Lent—over 300 pairs have been donated so far and donations are accepted at 201 Lafayette Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday or 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday until Palm Sunday. - ➤ Orange City's West Volusia Dream Center, a nonprofit converted from a gym at 2479 S. Volusia Ave., has fed 30 to 40 homeless people daily and provided groceries to over 300 families each month since it opened three years ago — the center founded by Trinity Church Pastor Jamie Jones and led by Executive Director Chris Rojas also offers showers, rest, and worship services to those in need. - ➤ 71-year-old Kevin McNamara was arrested after he allegedly rammed an SUV carrying eight people — including five children — during a road rage incident on Beville Road near a golf course off Wilder Avenue in Daytona Beach; he appeared in court wearing an orange jumpsuit and now faces 15 felony charges with a bond of $150,000. - ➤ On April 1st the Volusia County Council made the Ormond dog beach permanent after a review showed few rule violations and strong public support. The dog beach — where dogs must stay on a six-foot leash and owners must clean up after them — will remain open from sun up to sun down. Hometown News
- ➤ Volusia County will open the $1.4 million Veterans Memorial Plaza at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 25 on the northwest corner of the Tom Staed Veterans Memorial Bridge in Daytona Beach (it is the final phase of the county’s memorial along the Halifax River). The grand opening will include flags for the six military branches, a World War I memorial and fire monument with engraved names, and residents may honor veterans with on-site bricks available for donation ($125 or $300 each).
