Good morning, Daytona Beach.

The Volusia Sheriff's Office arrested 32-year-old Daytona Beach resident Trevin Smith after evidence linked him to a fentanyl sale that led to a 35-year-old Ormond Beach woman's overdose death on Wednesday morning—bodycam footage showed him trying to flee from a 7-Eleven where he discarded his cell phone and a small bag of fentanyl before being caught.

On April 25, Embry-Riddle students in Daytona Beach presented a record 211 research projects by 535 students—Juksana Mai Ngam won Best Graduate Research Poster for her study on a biometric vehicle system.

The event also featured work on topics like fighting bacteria in space and mapping plant species, which helps prepare students for future careers in science.

Volusia fire crews are doubling their response by sending two engines and two brush trucks to brush fires that have scorched hundreds of acres amid extreme drought, and the Florida Forest Service has deployed five fire trucks and a task force.

Firefighters remain on high alert as Jeep Beach brings thousands of visitors, and they urge everyone to follow burn bans—helping to keep the area safe.

At Giuseppe's Pizza in Port Orange, the nonprofit Volusia Recovery Alliance placed a ONEbox containing naloxone, PPE, and an instruction video in English and Spanish to help reverse opioid overdoses—over 200 fatal overdoses were reported in the county in 2023.

The program, funded partly by an opioid lawsuit settlement, has deployed more than 80 boxes this year and will continue to add more locations to save lives.
