ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On August 26, a 72-year-old surfer named David Coffee rescued a father and son from a rip current near Marianne Clancy Park in New Smyrna Beach after hearing their cries, and county officials reported both were fine.  FOX 35 Orlando

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Embry-Riddle researchers have developed an AI system that turns pilots’ and air traffic controllers’ radio talks into text to help reduce errors and improve safety. The system uses speech recognition and natural language processing (via OpenAI’s Whisper) and has received $30,000 from the Boeing Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety (to support future real-time tests).  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Volusia County announced that all county administrative offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 1 for Labor Day while trash collection in unincorporated areas and disposal sites follow regular schedules. Votran will run a limited Sunday schedule on that day—regular transit services will resume on Sept. 2.  Hometown News
  • FDOT painted over the iconic checkered flag crosswalks along Int'l Speedway Blvd overnight due to a new state rule—leaving residents disappointed with the change—and Daytona International Speedway was notified in advance.  WNDB
  • Daytona officials repainted the checkered flag crosswalk outside Daytona International Speedway — a move in a statewide crackdown on decorative street art — after FDOT said the change was needed because the pattern posed safety risks following a similar action in Orlando.  FOX 35 Orlando

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A recent Zumper.com analysis shows one-bedroom rentals in New Smyrna Beach are the priciest in the Orlando Metro area with a median price of $2,040 today—Daytona Beach and other nearby cities have lower rates. Rising rents are urging more locals to consider buying homes rather than renting.  The Daytona Beach News-Journal
